Introduction to QGIS PCRaster
PCRaster is a powerful open-source GIS modeling tool, specifically developed for hydrological analysis and environmental modeling. It enables users to process spatial data, analyze hydrological patterns, and develop dynamic models for landscape and environmental processes.
In QGIS, PCRaster is used via the QGIS PCRaster Tools plugin to, among other things, define watersheds, simulate water flows, and perform spatial analyses. For more advanced applications, the PCRaster Dynamic Modelling Framework in Python offers an efficient method for modeling and simulating spatial processes over time.
This course guides you step by step through the use of PCRaster in QGIS, starting with the basics in the graphical interface and then delving deeper into Python scripting for advanced spatial analysis and modeling.
What will you learn in the Blended Learning course?
In this QGIS PCRaster Blended Learning course, you’ll learn how to use PCRaster for hydrological analysis, spatial modeling, and GIS workflows.
You’ll start with PCRaster in QGIS and learn to work with the QGIS PCRaster Tools plugin. With this, you’ll perform watershed determinations and runoff analyses and apply spatial calculations. You’ll learn to find and download SRTM DEM tiles via EarthExplorer, merge raster layers into a virtual raster layer, reproject rasters, and create subsets. You’ll also discover how to fill sinks in a DEM, calculate and visualize flow directions, and apply Strahler orders for river network analysis.
Next, you’ll get started with map algebra in Python and learn how to use PCRaster in Python for spatial calculations and interpolations. You’ll learn to convert raster data with GDAL in Python, style raster layers for clear visualization of water flows and drainage basins, and how to determine flows and drainage basins with PCRaster.
In the final part of the course, you will delve into dynamic modeling using the PCRaster Dynamic Modeling Framework. You will learn how to use PCRaster Dynamic Modeling concepts and data formats to simulate spatial processes over time. Ultimately, you will be able to develop dynamic models for water management and environmental applications.
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to effectively apply PCRaster within GIS workflows and perform complex spatial analyses.
Why take this 1-on-1 QGIS PCRaster course?
Blended learning combines independent online learning with practical, interactive sessions, so you gain both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience with QGIS and PCRaster. The online modules offer you the flexibility to study at your own pace and include interactive lessons on hydrological analysis, spatial modeling, and GIS workflows. You’ll learn to work with the QGIS PCRaster Tools plugin, apply map algebra in Python, and develop dynamic models.
During the practical online sessions, you’ll immediately apply the knowledge you’ve gained. You’ll work with real GIS datasets and receive guidance from experienced instructors. You’ll learn to analyze water flows and watersheds, combine and edit raster layers, and create dynamic models for hydrological applications.
Through this combination, you will not only learn how to use PCRaster in QGIS, but also how to apply it in realistic GIS projects. After completing this course, you will be able to use PCRaster for hydrological modeling and spatial analysis, enabling you to achieve more well-founded and accurate results in your GIS work.
