Frequently Asked Questions About the (Junior) GIS Specialist Job Opening

A GIS Specialist collects, manages, analyzes, and visualizes geographic data using specialized GIS software such as ArcGIS or QGIS. Using this data, you create maps and conduct spatial analyses to help organizations make decisions regarding spatial planning, the environment, infrastructure, environmental research, transportation, or other geographic issues.

Because geographic information is crucial for spatial decision-making: without reliable data and maps, it is difficult to properly support plans, infrastructure, environmental initiatives, or spatial development. A GIS Specialist ensures that data is reliable, up-to-date, and analyzed correctly, thereby making a direct contribution to quality, efficiency, safety, and well-informed decisions.

Key requirements include:

  • Proficiency in GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar) and geodatabases.
  • Ability to perform spatial analysis, data management, ensure data integrity, and visualize and process data from various sources.
  • Analytical insight, accuracy, and the ability to translate data into clear maps or visualizations that are understandable to decision-makers.
  • Additional technical knowledge—such as scripting (e.g., Python, SQL), data manipulation, or automation—is a plus, depending on the complexity of the datasets.

A typical day might include:

  1. Importing and verifying new spatial datasets or updates.
  2. Performing spatial analyses (such as overlay, network, or area analysis), data cleansing, and database management.
  3. Creating or updating maps, graphical visualizations, or thematic analyses.
  4. Meeting with colleagues or clients to discuss data and analyses and translate them into practical proposals or recommendations.
  5. Maintaining documentation and ensuring the quality of geodata.

GIS specialists are involved in areas such as urban and spatial planning, infrastructure, the environment, water management, environmental impact and risk assessment, infrastructure networks, and environmental research, as well as logistics, transportation, green space management, spatial analysis, asset management, and more.

This is highly recommended, for example, for those with a background in geography, geoinformatics, civil engineering, or a related field. For Geo-ICT, a solid foundation in geodata and GIS software is essential. Candidates with a college or university degree and an interest in geoinformation are a good fit.

With experience and further development, you can advance to senior roles, such as GIS architect, geodata analyst, project or team leader, or specialist in data integration, geodata management, or data science/geo-AI. GIS specialists with scripting and data engineering skills are in high demand.

At Geo-ICT, geoinformation is combined with sector- or domain-specific data, and geodata is used for a wide range of applications: from infrastructure and the environment to planning and asset management. A GIS Specialist helps organize, analyze, and visualize that data effectively, thereby supporting not only data management but also the delivery of services to clients.

Because you combine technical expertise with spatial awareness, analytical skills, and the ability to make an impact. You’ll work on socially relevant topics, solve spatial and infrastructure challenges, and see firsthand how your work contributes to areas such as the living environment, infrastructure, the environment, or planning. Plus, the role offers a wide variety of projects, data types, and techniques.

You can apply directly through this job posting by filling out your details and cover letter and uploading your resume; this is usually followed by an introductory interview. If you’re unsure whether your profile is a good fit, you can also contact us for more information with no obligation.
