The OpenCities Map User Course provides a practical introduction to working with the OpenCities Map GIS platform, built on MicroStation. Participants will learn how to compile, edit, and analyze geographic data within a mapping environment
Bentley OpenCities Map is a powerful GIS platform for managing, visualizing, and analyzing geographic information within infrastructure projects. The software builds on the CAD functionality of MicroStation and extends it with advanced tools for creating and managing spatial data. OpenCities Map is used worldwide by organizations involved in the planning, design, construction, and management of urban and infrastructure environments.
With its intuitive interface and extensive capabilities, OpenCities Map provides a solid foundation for professionals who want to combine geographic information with design data. The software makes it easy to manage map layers, perform analyses, and integrate data from various sources. This allows users to create accurate GIS maps and utilize their data both visually and analytically.
Whether you’re working on urban planning, utilities, or spatial analysis, OpenCities Map provides the tools to work efficiently and consistently within a single integrated environment.
Please note! A solid understanding of MicroStation is essential for this course. If you don’t have this knowledge, we recommend taking the MicroStation Basics course first.
OpenCities Map is Bentley Systems’ GIS solution, developed for creating, managing, and analyzing geographic datasets. The application combines the accuracy of CAD with the power of GIS, allowing users to manage both technical drawings and geographic information. The software supports various data formats such as ESRI SHP, MapInfo, and Oracle Spatial, which facilitates collaboration between systems.
Users can work with predefined features, edit and analyze them, and create maps using the Map Manager and Command Manager. Additionally, the software offers functions for topology cleanup, working with coordinate systems, and performing thematic analyses.
The OpenCities Map for Users course at Geo-ICT is ideal for professionals who want to work with geographic data in a CAD environment and leverage the power of Bentley’s GIS platform for modern infrastructure projects.

Contact usThe first day is dedicated to getting acquainted with the OpenCities Map environment and understanding the key GIS concepts within the software. Participants will learn to work with the interface, project structure, and Map Manager to build and manage maps. They will then practice placing and editing predefined features using the Command Manager. The course also covers importing external GIS file formats (such as ESRI SHP and MapInfo), so that participants learn how to combine different data sources within a single project.
On the second day, the focus is on applying the more advanced features of OpenCities Map. Participants will learn how to clean up topological errors, work with coordinate systems, and perform spatial analyses to identify relationships and patterns in geographic data. In addition, attention is given to creating thematic displays and preparing maps for print or digital presentation using print frames. The day concludes with a summary exercise in which participants independently compile a complete GIS map—from data import to final presentation.
Participants will learn:

The course is designed for professionals who work with geographic data, such as GIS specialists, drafters, and designers who want to create, edit, and analyze map information within the OpenCities Map environment.
A basic understanding of MicroStation is helpful, but not required. During the training, we will explain the key features needed to work effectively with OpenCities Map.
OpenCities Map is the successor to Bentley Map and offers a more modern, comprehensive environment for managing and analyzing geographic data. The main differences are:
Name and platform: OpenCities Map is the updated version of Bentley Map within Bentley’s broader OpenCities platform, designed for smart urban and infrastructure applications.
Integration and workflows: OpenCities Map aligns better with modern BIM and digital twin processes, improving data integration and collaboration across disciplines.
