Introduction to GIS Training

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are at the heart of our modern digital world, where geographic information and geodata play an indispensable role. GIS makes it possible not only to collect and store geographic data, but also to analyze and present it in a visually compelling way. This technology helps us understand and interpret the Earth and its complex patterns in an entirely new way, from urban planning and environmental management to logistics and emergency response.

The heart of GIS lies in its ability to integrate different types of data and relate them to specific locations on the Earth’s surface. This means you can see how data are interconnected in the context of geographic location. For example, you can examine the relationship between population density and road networks in a given area, or analyze the distribution of certain flora and fauna in relation to climate change.

The power of GIS lies in its versatility. It is used in countless fields—from governments planning urban expansion, to companies optimizing delivery routes, to scientists studying environmental changes. This breadth of applications makes GIS indispensable for decision-making and planning in nearly every conceivable domain.

At Geo-ICT, the richness and potential of GIS technologies are fully harnessed through the GIS Course. This course delves deep into the core of GIS, where participants learn to work with leading Geo-ICT applications such as QGIS and FME Desktop. Geo-ICT strives not only to make students proficient in using these programs but also to provide them with a deep understanding of how geoinformation can be used to solve complex problems.

QGIS and FME Desktop are central to this learning experience, with a focus on applying this software in practical geo-projects. Whether it involves analyzing spatial information in raster and vector models or creating powerful geodata visualizations, the course offers a solid foundation for anyone who wants to take their knowledge of geo-information to the next level.

What exactly is GIS?

GIS, or Geographic Information Systems, is a revolutionary technology that enables us to store, analyze, manage, and visualize all kinds of geographic information and geodata. But what really makes GIS unique? It’s the ability to link different datasets based on location. This means that with GIS, you can gain a multidimensional view of a specific area by looking not only at what is there, but also at how these elements relate to one another.

Imagine having access to a tool that not only tells you where things are, but also provides insights into how they are connected. This can be crucial, for example, when planning a new residential neighborhood, mapping wildfire risk zones, or even optimizing delivery routes for a business. GIS offers this capability by overlaying layers of information on a single map, thereby simplifying complex analyses and decision-making processes.

The GIS training at Geo-ICT is specifically designed to give you in-depth knowledge of this powerful tool. By participating, you’ll learn not only how to effectively collect and analyze geographic information, but also how to translate this information into practical, actionable solutions for real-world problems. Whether you’re a beginner in the world of geographic information or a seasoned professional looking to expand your skills, this course provides you with the knowledge and tools to apply GIS in your field.

Through practical lessons and hands-on exercises with QGIS and FME Desktop, you’ll learn the ins and outs of GIS software and how to use it to analyze geographic data. This makes the course not only a learning experience but also a journey of discovery through the multifaceted world of geoinformation.

At a time when geodata is playing an increasingly important role in nearly every aspect of our society, Geo-ICT’s GIS Course offers you the opportunity to stay ahead in this exciting and rapidly evolving field. Step into the world of GIS and discover how you can use geoinformation to change, improve, and protect the world.

The Importance of GIS in Today’s World

In our current, rapidly changing world, the role of GIS cannot be underestimated. It is not just a tool for geographers or urban planners; it is an essential technology that influences nearly every aspect of our daily lives. From optimizing route planning for deliveries to managing natural resources and predicting climate change, GIS helps us better understand and manage the complex world we live in.

Consider, for example, how urban planners use GIS to shape the future of urban development. By analyzing geodata, they can better determine where new parks, schools, or roads are most needed and how future growth can be supported sustainably. But the importance of GIS extends beyond planning and development. In agriculture, for example, it is used to maximize crop yields and optimize resource use, while scientists use it to track and predict environmental trends, from melting ice caps to animal migration patterns.

The GIS Course at Geo-ICT not only provides insight into the basic principles and applications of GIS; it also prepares you for a future in which this technology plays a key role in decision-making processes around the world. By understanding the versatile applications of GIS and learning how to use this technology to solve complex problems, you will be equipped with skills that are valuable across many sectors.

Furthermore, the emphasis on practical experience and hands-on learning at Geo-ICT underscores the importance of not only knowing the theory behind GIS but also being able to apply it effectively in real-world scenarios. This ensures that course participants leave not only with an in-depth knowledge of GIS software such as QGIS and FME Desktop, but also with the confidence and skills to apply this knowledge in their own projects and careers.

In a world where the volume and diversity of available data continue to grow, the ability to interpret this data and use it to inform decision-making is more important than ever. GIS is central to this skill set, making the GIS Course at Geo-ICT not only an investment in personal or professional development, but also in the future of our society.

GIS Course Schedule

Day 1

On this day, you’ll get a comprehensive overview of the software. We’ll walk you through the entire user interface so you can quickly get the hang of it. The following topics will definitely be covered on this first day: general use of QGIS, adding layers, presentation and plot settings, visualizing geodata, text labels, thematic presentations, exchange with other systems such as Office, use of the National Geo Register and other Catalog Services, accessing WMS services and using public WMS and Tiling services, searching for and retrieving alphanumeric data, PDOK, OpenStreetMap. A well-stocked GIS database allows for various queries and analyses. That is the power of GIS: performing analyses and visualizing the results. During this session, you will gain knowledge and insight into structuring spatial information in raster and vector models.

Day 2

Through various case studies and practical applications, the course demonstrates how GIS analyses can help provide or obtain information about spatial issues. Students practice overlay analyses, buffer analyses, and proximity analyses. You will also learn to modify existing geometry and draw new geometry. You will create map layers and draw objects yourself. This way, you will learn to import CAD files and copy lines into a GIS layer, which you will then use to create GIS objects. You will then learn to link administrative data to these GIS objects. You will also learn to make (bulk) updates to GIS objects. In this way, you will build a GIS file from other sources. Storing GIS data in a database such as PostgreSQL is also covered.

Day 3

During the introduction, we’ll explore the FME Desktop interface. Using the appropriate reader, we’ll first import the desired data. With the help of the separate desktop component, FME Data Inspector, you’ll conduct an initial exploration of the geometry and attributes of the objects. This will help us familiarize ourselves with the data and determine which transformers we need to perform any necessary data transformations. A selection of the most important transformers will be covered, including the: Tester, AttributeManager, PointonAreaOverlayer, Sorter, and FeatureMerger. Through various exercises, you’ll learn to design your first transformations in an interactive way.
