What You’ll Learn in the QGIS Basics Course

Fundamentals of QGIS: From Map Layers to GIS Data Types

As you explore QGIS, you’ll dive into the world of geoinformation with a focus on the fundamentals essential for every GIS professional. You’ll start with the core components that form the backbone of any GIS analysis:

  • Map layers: The building blocks of GIS, which allow you to visually represent and organize different types of data.
  • GIS Data Types: Understanding how different data types, such as vector and raster data, are used in geographic analyses.

These fundamentals enable you to effectively navigate the QGIS environment, from adding map layers to performing basic analyses. Through hands-on exercises, you’ll learn how to:

  • Compile and customize maps for specific projects.
  • Manipulate different data types to gain insights.
  • Use essential tools within QGIS for data management and analysis.

Every aspect of these fundamentals is covered during the QGIS Basics Course at Geo-ICT, where you gain hands-on experience through guided instructions and exercises. This helps you build a solid foundation that prepares you for more advanced techniques and applications within the geoinformation world.

Practical Skills: Analysis Tools and Queries in QGIS

An in-depth knowledge of QGIS enables you to use advanced analysis tools and queries, which are essential for unlocking the full potential of geoinformation. These practical skills are crucial for performing detailed analyses and gaining insights from complex datasets. Some key points you will learn include:

  • Using Analysis Tools: Learn how to apply QGIS’s built-in analysis tools to explore data and identify patterns.

Schedule for the QGIS Basics Course

Day 1

On this day, you will receive a comprehensive overview of the software package. We will walk you through the entire user interface so that you can quickly find your way around. The following topics will definitely be covered on this first day: general use of QGIS, adding layers, presentation and plot settings, visualizing geodata, text labels, thematic presentations (symbology), render settings, exchange with other systems such as Office, calculating lengths and areas, working with the attribute table, making selections, and discussing various geo-standards.

After this day, you will be able to:

  • Download QGIS
  • Load data into QGIS.
  • Work with different map layers
  • Add and modify properties of objects on the map
  • Visually present your geographic data

Day 2

During this session, you will gain insight into the various ways of presenting data, such as through raster or vector models. You will work with different types of data, and we will explain the various file formats. We will also cover coordinate systems, including spatial projection and the georeferencing of data.

A well-stocked GIS database can be used to perform various queries and analyses. That is the power of GIS: performing analyses and visualizing the results. The application of GIS analyses is illustrated using various practical examples. Participants will practice with the most important geoprocessing tools, such as overlay analyses and buffer analyses.

In addition, this day will focus on importing data from other sources. You will learn to import CSV files and link this data to the maps. We will discuss the use of open data, including the National Geo Register and PDOK. We will also work on field calculations in QGIS and performing statistical analyses.

After this day, you will be able to:

  • Import open data
  • Perform simple spatial analyses using QGIS
  • Perform more complex queries and selections
  • Link and combine data from different sources
  • Work with coordinate systems

Day 3

This final day of the QGIS Basic Course focuses on creating new (geo)data and modifying existing data in QGIS. You will learn how to create map layers yourself and draw new objects within them. You will also learn how to enter administrative data about these objects. The course will also cover the creation of data entry forms. Furthermore, we will link photos and URLs to objects on the map.

After this day, participants will be able to independently build a GIS project file using various sources and their own input. Storing GIS data in a database such as PostgreSQL will also be covered. Depending on the participant’s preference, there will also be time during this session to work with data brought by the participant.

After this day, you will be able to:

  • Create and edit new map layers
  • Edit existing data
  • Standardize data entry using forms
  • Link photos or websites to data
