Introduction to Configuring GeoNode

Do you want to not only work with GeoNode, but also fully customize the platform to meet your organization’s needs? In this course, you’ll learn how to configure and optimize GeoNode so you can set up a professional geoportal that perfectly suits your specific use case.

GeoNode is an open-source platform used worldwide to manage, publish, and share geodata. With powerful integrations such as GeoServer and PostGIS, GeoNode offers all the capabilities needed to make datasets and maps available online. But with the right configuration, you can do even more: customize the interface, refine user roles, set metadata standards, and establish links with external data sources.

In this course, you’ll discover step by step how to configure and deploy GeoNode as a robust foundation for spatial data infrastructures (SDI), geoportals, and collaborative environments.

You’ll work with free open-source software, complete practical exercises, and develop skills you can immediately apply in your professional practice.

Please note! Basic knowledge of GeoNode is required. For this, check out the GeoNode Basics course

What will you learn in the GeoNode Configuration course

In this course, you’ll get hands-on experience with the core of GeoNode configuration:

  • Installation and basic configuration: how to install and set up GeoNode for use in a professional environment.
  • Managing users and roles: setting up refined access rights and workflows for different types of users.
  • Customizing the interface and functionalities: tailoring branding, menus, and workflows to your organization’s needs.
  • Configuring metadata and standards: ensuring that datasets comply with international standards and are easy to find.
  • Integrations and extensions: Connecting GeoNode with QGIS, GeoServer, PostGIS, or external data sources.
  • Management and security: authorization, backups, and optimizing the performance of your GeoNode environment.

Whether you want to set up a geoportal for a municipality, develop an SDI for a research project, or create a secure environment for collaboration with partners—after this course, you’ll have the knowledge to configure GeoNode professionally.

Why choose the GeoNode Configuration course

This course goes beyond an introduction: you’ll learn not only how to use GeoNode, but how to truly design and manage it. This sets the training apart from standard GIS courses.

Everything is explained step by step, with clear examples and hands-on assignments. You don’t need any programming knowledge—the focus is on configuration and management, so you can put GeoNode to use right away.

The course is designed for professionals and students who want to set up or manage a GeoNode environment. Whether you’re a GIS specialist, system administrator, researcher, or policymaker, this training will give you the knowledge and skills to tailor GeoNode to your organization’s needs.

Who is this course intended for?

This course is intended for anyone who wants to learn how to configure and manage GeoNode. Do you work in spatial planning, environmental management, research, education, or international cooperation? Then this course offers you the tools to set up a professional geoportal and make geodata accessible in a sustainable and secure manner.

You don’t need extensive prior technical knowledge. Thanks to the practical approach, you can get started right away. Do you already have experience with GeoNode or QGIS? Then in this course, you’ll learn how to get even more out of the platform by fully configuring it to your specific needs.

GeoNode Daily Schedule

Day 1 – Introduction and Basic Usage

On the first day, you’ll be introduced to GeoNode and learn the basics of the platform. We’ll cover the interface, user management, roles, and permissions. You’ll upload datasets and maps, customize styles, and add metadata. You’ll also learn how to search for, combine, and share information within GeoNode. By the end of the day, participants will understand GeoNode’s core functionalities and be able to publish and manage data on their own.

Day 2 – Advanced Use and Collaboration

The second day is dedicated to in-depth learning. You will learn how to work with access rights, version control, and collaboration workflows. We will also cover integration with QGIS and GeoServer, and how to use GeoNode as a full-fledged spatial data infrastructure (SDI). Finally, you will set up and present a small use case yourself. After this day, participants will be able to use GeoNode in a professional environment, set up data infrastructures, and organize collaboration.
