Introduction to GeoNode Administration

Do you want to not only use and configure GeoNode, but also professionally manage and maintain it within your organization? In this course, you will learn how to efficiently administer GeoNode so that you can offer a stable, secure, and future-proof geoportal that functions optimally in your work environment.

GeoNode is an open-source platform used worldwide to manage, publish, and share geodata. Thanks to integrations with GeoServer and PostGIS, among others, datasets and maps can be easily made available online. But good management goes further: as an administrator, you ensure reliable performance, secure access control, robust backups, and an environment that is scalable and sustainable.

In this course, you will discover step by step how to administer and manage GeoNode as the foundation for spatial data infrastructures (SDI), geoportals, and collaborative environments.

You’ll work with free open-source software, complete practical exercises, and develop skills that are immediately applicable in your professional practice.

Basic knowledge of GeoNode is required; please take the GeoNode Basic Course first.

What You Will Learn in the GeoNode Administration Course

In this course, you’ll get hands-on experience with the core aspects of GeoNode administration:

  • Installation and system administration: installing, updating, and monitoring GeoNode in a production environment.
  • User and access management: setting up roles and permissions, managing authorization and workflows.
  • Security and stability: configuring certificates, firewalls, backups, and recovery strategies.
  • Performance optimization: caching, logging, and monitoring usage and system load.
  • Dataset and service management: maintaining services and connecting them to external data sources.
  • Integration and scalability: Integrating GeoNode with GeoServer, PostGIS, and IT infrastructures.

Whether it’s a municipal geoportal, a research SDI, or a collaboration platform with partners—after this course, you’ll have the knowledge to professionally manage and maintain GeoNode.

Why choose the GeoNode Administration course

This course goes beyond basic use and configuration: you’ll learn how to make GeoNode truly manageable and sustainable. This sets this training apart from standard GIS courses.

Everything is explained step by step, with clear examples and hands-on assignments. No in-depth programming knowledge is required—the focus is on administration, security, and optimization, so you can put GeoNode to use immediately.

The course is designed for professionals and students responsible for setting up, managing, or maintaining a GeoNode environment. Whether you’re a GIS specialist, system administrator, researcher, or policymaker, this training will give you the knowledge and skills to use GeoNode safely and reliably.

Who is this course intended for?

This course is intended for anyone who wants to learn how to manage and administer GeoNode. Do you work in spatial planning, environmental management, research, education, or international cooperation? Then this course provides you with the tools to maintain a professional geoportal in a stable, secure, and sustainable manner.

Extensive prior technical knowledge is not required. Thanks to the practical approach, you can get started right away. Do you already have experience with GeoNode or QGIS? Then in this course, you’ll learn how to take your platform to the next level by managing and optimizing it professionally.

GeoNode is a good alternative if you are looking for an open-source solution for managing, publishing, and sharing geodata.

The U.S. Cloud Act could require Esri to hand over data to U.S. authorities, even if that data is physically located in Europe. As long as the software vendor has a U.S. parent company, a legal link to the U.S. remains.

Open-source alternatives offer not only technical flexibility but also legal independence.

More and more Dutch governments and companies are now opting for the complete GeoNode solution, which includes desktop, field, and web GIS applications—encompassing the entire GIS ecosystem.
