The Importance of Geoinformation and Surveying in the Modern World

In our rapidly changing world, understanding and applying geoinformation is more essential than ever. Whether it involves planning urban development, managing natural resources, or navigating the complexities of global logistics, the insights we gain from geoinformation are indispensable. But what makes geoinformation so crucial in the modern world?

  • Spatial planning: Developing urban and rural areas requires detailed knowledge of the land and its characteristics.
  • Environmental management: Managing water levels, forest conservation, and agricultural production are just a few examples where geoinformation is indispensable.
  • Disaster prevention and response: Being able to respond quickly to natural disasters with accurate geodata can save lives and limit damage.

Geoinformation and surveying enable us not only to understand the world around us but also to manage it more effectively and sustainably. The techniques and technologies you’ll learn in this course will equip you with the skills needed to tackle these challenges—from surveying land with advanced GPS equipment to analyzing complex datasets. You’ll be prepared for a future where geospatial information is central to virtually every aspect of modern life.

The Evolution of Surveying: From Traditional to GPS

The transition from traditional surveying methods to advanced GPS technology marks a significant turning point in the history of surveying and geoinformation. This evolution reflects not only advances in technological capabilities but also a shift in how we approach and understand the physical world.

  • From Compass to Satellite: Surveyors once relied on compasses and physical markers. Now we obtain precise data from satellites orbiting our entire planet.
  • Analysis and Application: With the advent of GPS, we can not only measure with greater accuracy but also analyze complex geodata and apply it in ways that were previously unimaginable.

The course at Geo-ICT takes you through this history and offers insight into both traditional methods and the latest GPS technologies. By bridging this knowledge gap, you will not only become proficient in using the latest equipment and software, but you will also gain a deeper understanding of the fundamental principles of surveying. This is your chance to become an expert in a field that continues to evolve and is essential to countless sectors worldwide.

Day 1

Surveying in the RD Coordinate System

The instructor will give a presentation on how surveying works in the Netherlands. Everything is measured in the RD coordinate system. You will learn how to take measurements and how to process them in AutoCAD.

Today, you’ll go outside in small groups to take your first measurements using a GPS receiver. You’ll measure points, lines, and areas and assign specific codes to the measurements. This allows you to quickly process the data into a map.

Taking elevation measurements

The instructor will explain how to use a spirit level. In the afternoon, you’ll go outside to perform a number of spirit level measurements and then process the data indoors. Is a large part of the Netherlands really below sea level? How is that measured? What is the lowest point? You’ll learn all of this during this day.
